About Me

Beth here. I'm a midwife and this is a bit of my journey.

I grew up all over the place, but for the sake of sparing you a verbal road trip across the United States, I call Southern Illinois and Texas home...when I'm in the States that is.
When I was in high school I spent time in West Africa and Haiti; my life was forever changed. My range of
vision changed from my own little world where life was filled with fun, friends, and me to the realities of a world so much bigger than I even knew existed. Thus began my journey to becoming a midwife who is passionate about maternal healthcare, specifically third world.

I attended Newlife International School of Midwifery in the Philippines, which grew my passion for serving women through maternal healthcare in the third world even more.  After two years in the Philippines, I graduated with my CPM and moved to Texas to work at Gentle Beginnings Birth and Wellness Center as a Licensed Midwife. How on earth did I end up being able to work with such amazing women?! I'm beyond grateful for the two and a half years I spent in Texas, but I felt that little tug pulling me third world again. I waited, sometimes impatiently, for that great big sign from God. Nope...it never came.

In January 2013, I came to Haiti to visit some dear friends, who are more like family/grandparents. While in Haiti I reconnected with Heartline Ministries and the midwives who work with Heartline. They asked for some short term help while one of their long term staff members went on furlough. I debated, prayed, sought, and finally decided to spend three months working at Heartline's Maternity Center in Port-au-Prince.

The rest is history. After being in the states for three years, I was quickly reminded when I came to Haiti why I'm passionate about maternal healthcare and serving women in the third world. I'm now working as a midwife in Haiti long term/indefinitely.

It wasn’t until I spent some time in Africa and Haiti that I really realized the huge need for midwives and felt God calling me to become a midwife. I was trained with Newlife International School of Midwifery while working as a midwife. I went to the Philippines with a group of 10 other women. During my time in the Philippines I worked at a maternity center in Davao attending over 400 births and delivering over one hundred babies in two years. I also helped run a small satellite prenatal clinic in the slums of the city. Working with these women was truly a highlight of my time in the Philippines. It was during my time there that I grew to have a deep love for mamas, babies, families, birth and the call to be a midwife. - See more at: http://gentlebeginningsbc.com/team/beth-johnson/#sthash.Odxlc89v.dpuf
